The build quality is the same for both sharp and unsharp katanas. There is no downgrade in materials, construction, or craftsmanship when choosing an unsharp version.
Both sharp and unsharp katanas are made using the same steel, the same forging process, the same full-tang construction, and the same assembly standards. The only difference is whether the final edge is sharpened or left blunt.
Unsharp katanas are not decorative substitutes or lower-quality versions. They are built to the same structural standard, with the same balance, fittings, and finish, making them ideal for display or safer handling without sacrificing authenticity or durability.
Choosing unsharp simply removes the cutting edge, not the quality. This allows collectors to enjoy the same craftsmanship and design, with added peace of mind.
How do I maintain my katana and take care of it?
Proper care will keep your katana in excellent condition and preserve both its appearance and performance. Here’s how to maintain it correctly:
Keep the blade clean and dry
After handling, gently wipe the blade with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints and moisture. Skin oils can cause corrosion over time if left on the steel.
Apply light oil regularly
Use a thin layer of blade oil or light mineral oil to protect the steel from rust. Apply sparingly and wipe away any excess. Oiling every few weeks is usually sufficient, more often in humid environments.
Store it correctly
Store your katana in a dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight. If stored in its sheath, ensure the blade is clean and lightly oiled first. For long-term storage, keeping the blade horizontal is recommended.
Avoid touching the blade edge
